PLANTATION HERSTELLING is an abandoned plantation comprising of an area between 2,500 and 3,000 acres on a bend in the Berbice River near to the Atlantic Ocean at the Northern end of South America. It contained hardwoods but most has been worked and the estate has secondary growth.It has frontage of four and a half miles along the West Bank of the Berbice River,fifteen miles from the Atlantic Ocean and is about two miles in depth going towards the Arbary River which is on its West one mile away. Small areas have been used for agricultural farming from time to time. Rice cultivation on two hundred acres ceased about twenty years ago and has since been fallow. The land is made up of alluvial clay and is very fertile.The plantation is accessed from the Capital City of Georgetown by seventy miles of good roads to Rosigno, at the entrance to the Berbice River and from there access to the property is by boat along a distance of sixteen miles.The Berbice River itself goes southward towards Brazil for a distance of a least 160 miles.There is direct access along the Berbice River from the plantation to the Atlantic Ocean.
There is one wooden building on the land constructed two years ago with four bedrooms and a small wooden cottage for a caretaker.Communication with the capital Georgetown can be made by mobile telephone.Rain water is collected at the premises but an artesian supply may be available at five hundred feet.Water for agriculture may be pumped from the Berbice River at any time.At present, investigations for oil are being carried out in Guyana over an area which includes the plantation.
